Fort Moultrie, an icon in
Charleston's history, was used in the revolutionary war as a safe haven
and base. Fort Moultrie is also where Edgar Allen Poe was stationed for a while and
wrote the "Gold Bug". An established Sullivan's Island bar
used this clever Authors title in naming one of
the
"locals favorite" pubs...figure that one out.
Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie for 13 months beginning in
November 1827. His time on Sullivan's Island inspired his story about
a mystical beetle that led to buried treasure called "the Gold-Bug".
Although he died alone, alcoholic and impoverished, Edgar Allan Poe left an
indelible mark on American letters.

Island you had better make arrangements before you arrive.
Sullivan's Island has limited short-term rentals and there are no hotels,
motels or B & B's.
