An excellent example of the awesome establishments available in West Ashley is Gene's Haufbrau. Established in 1952, Gene's Haufbrau is Charleston's oldest bar and features the largest selection of beers in town. Gene's also has great food to soak up all that beer. Their famous cheese fries are not for dieters or the squeamish. These fries are served on a huge platter covered in melted cheese, bacon, scallions with a big bowl of ranch on the side.
Sam Rittenberg Avenue and Highway 17 in West Ashley offer much more than just the clothing stores, automotive shops, and fast food restaurants one sees from the road. The shopping centers which line Sam Rittenberg Avenue and Highway 17 offer fine dining restaurants, authentic Spanish Tapas and wine bars, sushi and hibachi restaurants, sports bars, Greek restaurants, Chinese restaurants and local taverns.
The prices at these bars and restaurants in West Ashley are generally just a little bit less expensive than downtown Charleston...but the low country cuisine and unique atmospheres of these venues will impress even the critics.
